THE TWO-DAY sit-in by the fees and funding protesters in the Divinity Hall of the Bodleian Library came to an end on Friday morning after the University took legal action against them. The occupation started as a reaction to the treatment of Regan Early, a non-payer at Wadham. OUSU President Kirsty McNeill said: "The penalties offered to Regan were extremely severe. At the meeting afterwards it was thought that with the high level of support we had we could do something to try and make the university reconsider its position." ...

LMH WAS WITNESS to a feat of heroic enterprise late on Friday night as three members of the college rescued a drowning woman from the river Cherwell. The woman, who has asked not to be named, had been attending a party when she slipped into the river while walking near Bardwell Road. Despite attempts to rescue her, the strong current swept her 70-80 metres downstream, where she luckily managed to grab hold of a branch. Meanwhile, two guests at the party had attempted to reach her, but had been overturned, and so also had to be rescued. ...

AN OXFORD STUDENT has been threatened with a hypodermic needle by a homeless man who claimed it was infected with the HIV virus. Fortunately the student managed to escape unharmed. The attack, which occurred at the beginning of this month, is the most recent of a series of similar threatening incidents which began in early January, all occurring in the early evening in the city centre area around St. Giles and Cornmarket Street. In total, six people have come forward to the police, claiming to have been approached by the man, though none of them have been hurt. The suspect is described as an "aggressive beggar" around 25 years old, white, possibly of a quite heavy build and wearing a plain green combat- style jacket....

Last Saturday saw Sir Edward Heath address the European Affairs Society. He was the key note speaker for their 10th Anniversary Conference, 'Where is Europe Headed'. That ironic Americanism was probably not intended, given the suitably cosmopolitan nature of the committee. Neither would it really be in keeping with the spirit of European harmony to comment on Teutonic committee members barking out orders, or the charming but somewhat distracted English press officer....
