Bops under threat?
EXTRA SECURITY AND first aid was drafted in for the St Edmund Hall bop last Saturday as the college was put 'on probation' and threatened with an end to all bops.
Caroline Boon, Social Secretary on the Teddy Hall JCR Committee, sent out a warning provoked by college authorities who insisted on the presence of the security guards and first aid provision in the JCR Welfare room: "There were an unfortunate number of incidents at the last bop which were found to be totally unacceptable by the Principle, the Deans, the porters and the Teddy Hall staff generally. People were urinating on the building on the front quad and on the SCR, being rude, drunken and disrespectful and vomiting everywhere. Furthermore, some college property was damaged, and the fire alarms were set off and ignored.
"If any of these incidents occur again, we will simply not to be allowed to hold bops in Teddy Hall." An email emphasizing the threat was sent out to all JCR members by the President, Ali Richardson.
Teddy Hall was forced to ban bops for a term last year after fire regulations were broken due to the large number of people in the Wolfson Hall, said to be 'the biggest dance-floor Oxford'. A new fire door has now been put in to comply with safety rules.
The SCR of Christ Church has also warned members of the JCR and MCR about conduct at bops, amid rumours that pressure might be put on college events university-wide.
The University Proctors have denied that they are trying to clamp down any harder than the usual warnings about fire regulations and health and safety but the JCR Presidents may be discussing the future of bops in general with the Proctors at their regular meeting on February 5th.
