Drinking Enough?

Drinking Enough?

THE UNIVERSITY THIS week admitted that they are seeking to clamp down on "drinking to excess".

The University Assessor, Mr Bryan Ward-Perkins, stated that the authorities would specifically target events which charge a fee for entrance, but provide unlimited alcohol thereafter.

Mr Ward-Perkins insisted that he was not concerned by "alcohol use" but "alcohol misuse", which may lead to "monstrous drink binges" such as the Ski Club drinks last year, which resulted in the death of a St. Catz student.

A diverse range of societies could be affected by such a move, however, including boat clubs, the Medical Society and the European Affairs Society.

Presidential sources suggested that the meeting became heated, but then calmed down once it became clear that the Proctors were willing to listen to student representation. Damian Jenkins, of St. Hugh's, stated that the Proctors were convinced by presidential pleas that "drinking culture is exactly the same as twenty five years ago".

Ruth Hunt, OUSU President, concurred, stating that: "The university has been concerned about alcohol for approximately 400 years" and that she would be "highly sceptical about any draconian attempt" to restrict Entz.

OUSU was nonetheless in agreement with the University about the continued dangers of drinking to excess, and the perceived social cost to those who don't drink.

James Rowlands (VP-Welfare), stated that it was "very important that those who do not drink are not excluded", adding that: "if you're going to drink, drink safely".
