Blues Send DMU To Bed

By Jennifer Duff

As a result of flooding at the Marston ground, the Blues played their BUSA Halifax Championships group match against DMU Bedford in the Parks.

After a delayed start, Bedford began aggressively, scoring within the first five minutes. However, this acted as a wake up call to the Blues, who were increasingly in control as the match progressed.

The pack more than held their own against their far larger opponents, taking several scrums against the head and completely dominating the line-outs.

Reflecting this excellent display by the forwards, the UBS Warburg player of the match award went to second row Myfanwy Taylor, who had an excellent game in both attack and defence.

The control of the set pieces gave the backs a chance to exploit their pace against a larger team.

Alice Taylor had another excellent match, scoring two tries. Wing Mary Stewart soon joined her on the scoresheet and Gemma Saffhill added three points with a well-struck penalty kick.

Keshena Richards added two conversions to make the final score 32-5 to Oxford.

With just one more group match before the knock out stages of the BUSA Halifax Championships begin, the Blues will have to address their slow starts to matches.

However, with the Varsity Match just under a month away, the Blues can take confidence from their determined and encouraging performance.
