St Hilda's college has applied to turn a former youth hostel into student accommodation and a nursery. The University's only remaining women's college has applied to the City Council for planning permission to change the use of the former Youth Hostel Association building, in Headington.

The application includes plans to create a new access to the road, 11 parking spaces and 18 cycle stands. Dr Judith Milne, principal of St Hilda's College, said: "We're simply exploring the possibility of obtaining planning permission. It's too early to discuss any details at this stage."

Beaumont Street surgery GP Dr McPherson, a researcher at Oxford University's department of public health and primary care, has launched a website for patients diagnosed with breast cancer.

Dr Ann McPherson, who has suffered from the illness herself, said patients found a lot of help and support from others who had been through the same illness. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women. About 38,000 cases are diagnosed in the UK every year. The website is available on www.dipex.org

Tensions rose at Univ's JCR meeting on Sunday as the college voted to re-affiliate to the NUS amid allegations of unfairness during the meeting. One JCR member present accused the chairman of the meeting of partiality.

Toni Orlando, who proposed the motion of disaffiliation, complained that not all opinions were heard and that "Univ has made the wrong decision here."

Ruth Hunt and the National Treasurer of the NUS attended the meeting which at one point became inquorate, forcing members to be dragged from the bar to make up the numbers, resulting in many voting having only heard a few of the arguments.

There are plans by other University college students to re-submit the motion on a weekly basis in protest at the result.

In a term of mass NUS disaffiliation, Wadham have joined Univ in bucking the trend by strongly supporting reaffiliation at an SU meeting held on Sunday.
