Going to the Dogs
Mad-motion fever gripped Oxford colleges last week, as attempts by JCR committees to stave off mid-term apathy brought some bizarre results.
At Magdalen JCR rooms have been rechristened, one now going by the name of 'Dave' and St. Peter's have passed a motion to buy a greyhound to race.
Sadly, though, the Peter's JCR Committee later decided that a trip to the dog races for JCR members was the more viable option. JCR President Alexandra Belcher explained the change by saying that the committee felt that a dog might be "too much of a responsibility", and that they did not wish to be the cause of another stray dog wandering the streets of Oxford.
Meanwhile, St. Hugh's debated over a motion proposing to make the wearing of sub-fusc mandatory at all future JCR meetings, and to mandate the President to investigate the possibility of hiring out the Sheldonian for the fortnightly meetings.
Hugh's President, Damian Jenkins, stated that this motion was aimed at "highlighting the apathy" within the college, pointing out that the JCR failed to be quorate at the start of Sunday's meeting. He also said that no action could be taken should students not arrive in sub-fusc, they would merely be "frowned upon".
With regards to the Sheldonian, Jenkins stated that it would cost over £1000 per meeting to hire it out every fortnight.
There was an ulterior motive for the proposal being put forward, however, as it won the Hugh's JCR 'Best Motion' prize, and the proposer walked away with three boxes of chocolates, and bottles of gin, vodka, and Baileys.
Jenkins promised that more stunts lie ahead, as a bid to get his college members involved in decisions which affect them. Students currently seem to have little interest in college politics, leaving JCRs with no option but to introduced silliness instead.
