LIBRARY OCCUPATIONS HAVE been scrapped as an OUSU protest tactic, following the narrow passing of a motion condemning such actions at OUSU Council on Friday. The contoversial motion, proposed by Daniel Rees (Merton), passed by a margin of 41 to 36.
Hinesh Rajani (Merton), who seconded the motion, described it as "a victory for the student body and for common sense." Sean Sullivan, V-P (Finance), stated that he supported the motion as amended, and was glad that OUSU was "still committed to direct action on fees, causing problems to the university, not students."
The motion, however, left many embittered. OUSU representative Laura Santana of St. Hilda's was "deeply disappointed" and felt that the motion was 'pretty much the end of direct action in the Finance and Funding Campaign." According to Santana, occupations are meant to disrupt the student body as well as the administration".
The motion excluded the Bodleian's Divinity Hall, where the most widely publicised sit-in against fees took place in 2001. It did, however, include the Rad Cam, site of the unsuccessful and unofficial protest two weeks ago.
