Turner for Chancellor
It seems that pleas for more credible candidates for Chancellor have still not been answered, with Anthea Turner, former National Lottery hostess, the latest public figure to show interest.
Turner, who spoke at the Oxford Union last Thursday in a Private Lives debate, was asked by OxStu reporter Paul Afshar if she would consider running. She replied excitedly, "OH. MY.GOD! That would be fabulous", adding "I could just see myself in crushed velvet."
Once Afshar assured her she would be able to get the 50 necessary supporting signatures, Turner implied a definite wish to stand. She continued: "We could run my campaign as Anthea Turner, ex-'queen of daytime television'. I'd come and speak at societies in Oxford."
Although Turner's motives and credibility are questionable, the same could be said of another possible candidate, the notorious Christine Hamilton. Although a first female Chancellor may be welcomed by many, there are some doubts as to whether Hamilton or Turner, who has also hosted 'Blue Peter' and 'Wish you were here?', would be entirely suited to this coveted role in the political and academic world. But so long as she will look good in the gown, Oxford awaits with enthusiasm for confirmation of Turner's candidacy.
