Opera in Oxford
The launching of the Oxford City Opera's (OCO) first fully-staged project in early March will see the resurrection of an age-old Oxonian cultural tradition, with the primary aim of bringing professional-quality opera to students.
The student-run company, set up in 2002 following the disbanding of the Oxford University Opera Club (OUOC) in 1992, aims to bring major operatic works to Oxford, allowing students "the unique opportunity to engage in all aspects of production." It attracted over 1000 student members in first week of the academic year, dispelling the prevalent myth of opera as "elitist, insincere and boring".
The upcoming production of La Boheme, produced by thee perienced Amanda Walker, involves over 100 students, with Chorus Master Timothy Burke describing the production to The OxStu as "a gigantic thing to do" and that it "will be of the highest quality".
La Boheme is at the Oxford Playhouse 5th-8th March, student tickets: £7.
