Twigg offers £10K to Balliol
In a show of support for students, Stephen Twigg MP pledged to give more than £10,000 in endowments to Balliol, his former Oxford college, at a debate at Birmingham University last week.
Mike Keating, Vice-President for Education in the Birmingham Guild of Students, told The OxStu that he asked the minister "How much would you give?", given the recommendations in the government's recent White Paper on higher education for an endowment culture amongst those who had benefited from university education in the past.
In response, the Junior Schools minister promised to hand over an amount based upon the fees he would have paid during his time at Oxford in the late 1980s. In an interview with Birmingham University's student press following the debate, Twigg said that he would calculate the sum according to the projected fees due to be introduced in 2006.
The minister was not available for comment at the time of going to press.
