A Stirling Effort

AT THE END of a gruelling 120 minutes of football, the Blues extended the their unbeaten home record to take a place in the last 8 of the BUSA championship. The 1-0 victory over Scottish champions Stirling, sealed with a header by Chris Bone in extra-time, took the team to the furthest stage of the competition since their entrance, and provided a welcome boost ahead of the Varsity match on March 12.

A nervous start saw the Blues fail to find their rhythm, with the away side quick in the tackle to prevent the slick passing that Iflley Road has become accustomed to this season. Good in the air, and well organised throughout, Stirling settling down and looked to be enjoying the occasion. However, the Oxford back four were once again at their imperious best, preventing Sterling getting a clear chance at goal, and the team still seemed the more penetrative, with both tireless front man Richards, and midfield enforcer Bone, unlucky when put through.

The second half saw both teams enjoy more time and space, and it was the Blues who were more suited to take advantage. Osman Akkaya hit the post with a 30-yard drive, and Richards once again came close. The defence continued to look comfortable, particularly thanks to the efforts of wingers Dunford and captain Costello, working back to great effect, and the confidence of keeper Walker between the posts. Yet even in-form striker Brendan McGurk could not break the deadlock, and whilst the introduction of fresh legs in the form of Lowe and Patterson, provided even more impetus, both teams were understandably cautious as the full time whistle blew.

Extra-time saw the home team apply more pressure, with both substitutes looking particularly dangerous, and individual battles being won all over the pitch. Yet, despite being dominated in terms of possession and territory, Sterling still provided a threat, with Mark Addley having to make a fantastic block in front of his goal to prevent a certain goal. Thankfully though, fears of a penalty shootout were avoided after Oxford were an awarded a free kick on the left touchline. Patterson delivered the perfect cross, and JJ Bone rose above the crowd to crash a header in off the upright. Another hard fought victory continues a great season for this improving Oxford side, and whilst not a vintage performance, the win did emphasise the steel and spirit in the side.

The Blues now face Swansea away in the quarter finals.

This year's game will take place on Wednesday March 12 at QPR's Loftus Road Ground at 7:30. Come and see if Oxford can complete a unique hatrick of victories over the light blues this year.
