Applied to Annexe-ter?
Exeter College severely misjudged the number of interviewees last month, resulting in a number being accommodated in their faraway annexe, as well as by neighbours Jesus.
The college, referred to by the Rector Professor Marylin Butler as "a friendly, supportive community", only recognised the problem a day in advance of their arrival. Current undergraduates with vacation residence were asked to move out but the majority refused.
Most interviewees were accommodated in traditional rivals Jesus' houses on Ship Street, for which Exeter had to pay rent. An unlucky few were housed in Exeter's own Stapledon House, situated about a mile down Iffley Road, with a shuttle bus laid on at short notice for the three days.
One girl, recently accepted to read Philosophy and Modern Languages said, "It didn't give me a good impression of the college, but it wasn't too bad", though a Physics and Philosophy applicant said that the ordeal had "added greatly to the immense stress of forthcoming interviews".
