Oxonians Honoured

By Ella Davies

Numerous Oxford academics and alumni received recognition for their achievements in the New Year's Honours List, writes Ella Davies.

The list conferred a smattering of titles on eminent Oxonians across a wide range of academic disciplines.

Academics featured particularly prominently as recipients of the CBE award: Christopher Allsop, Professor Keith Gull, Professor Keith Burnett and social-scientist Frances Cairncross were all granted the accolade. Dr Maurice Keen (Balliol College) received an OBE for his work in medieval history, Professor Roger Cashmore, Principal of Brasenose, received a CMG for services to international co-operation in particle physics, and Keble's Mike Brady, was knighted.

Notable amongst Oxford graduates reaping honours were Timothy Berners-Lee, knighted for services to global development of the internet, and Anthony Leggett, winner of the 2003 Nobel prize in physics.

In the recently published Who's Who of 2004, over a third of all new names are Oxbridge alumni.
