Holocaust Memorial
On Tuesday 27th January, a number of University-wide events will be held to commemorate the Holocaust.
National Holocaust Memorial Day was established in Britain in 2001 and marks the 59th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi extermination camp Auschwitz-Birkenau.
Last year's national commemoration was held in Edinburgh with a focus on the theme of children as victims and witnesses of the Holocaust. For 2004, the theme of Holocaust Memorial Day is 'From the Holocaust to Rwanda: lessons learned, lessons still to learn.'
Oxford University students are organising their own local commemoration, which co-organiser Daniel Lowe says will "seek to remember the victims and to educate students on the events of the Shoah and other genocides."
Rosie Buckland, OUSU VP (Welfare & Equal Opportunities) told The OxStu: "The service has been a part of Oxford's commemorative activities since Holocaust Memorial Day became officially recognised as a national 'event' in 2001." See speaker listings for details.
