Jeff Skoll, the founder of online auction company e-Bay, is donating £4.1m to start up a centre for social entrepreneurship at Oxford University's Saïd Business School, writes Alexandra Howe.

Skoll was inspired to donate the money after noticing that many of the applicants to his philanthropic Skoll Foundation shared certain similarities.

Sally Osberg, chief executive of the Skoll Foundation, argues that a sound business education is vital for any twenty-first century social entrepreneur: "It's important to remember that most social entrepreneurs are building an organisation and it has the same challenges as any other business."
