Tabs Not Worthy

By Laura Keenan Emily McCarthy

A Cambridge Don has announced that two-thirds of the students that he has taught are not worthy of their place.

Professor John Marenbon, a fellow at Trinity College, claimed that he had seen a substantial decline in the standard of students' academic curiosity and willingness to work. This has once again provoked debate about the recent changes to the A-level system and the effectiveness of university admissions procedures.

An Oxfor Senior Tutor stated that Professor Marendon's comments were "extreme and highly cynical", and that his views would not be held by the majority of Oxford tutors. She added that a high proportion of students were still obtaining firsts and high second class degrees and that subsequently, since the demands of the university examinations have not changed, students must still be as capable as their predecessors.
