Bannister breaks 50 barrier

Sir Roger Bannister's record-breaking achievement of the first four-minute-mile run is to be celebrated 50 years on in Oxford on 6th May.

The record was made at the University's Iffley Road sports ground, and half a century later student athletes and the Amateur Athletics Association will pay tribute to his accomplishment.

The athletes will compete in races for the duration of the day, which will culminate in an 'elite mile' starting at 6.00pm - the time that Bannister began his run.

Sir Roger was a medical student at Oxford, and later made Master of Pembroke College in 1985. He hopes the event will, "serve as an inspiration to sportsmen and women everywhere, to keep striving to achieve their best through personal effort alone".

Fraser Thompson, President of the Oxford University Athletics Club, told The OxStu: "For the athletes at Oxford this is what we have been building up to for years. It is something that we are looking forward to with great anticipation as he is a role model to us all".
