Oxford's Number Two

Oxford

Despite being highly praised, Oxford's public toilets have lost out in the Loo of the Year competition.

Toilets in Gloucester Green and Diamond Place were awarded four stars, whilst Oxpens and Bury Knowles Park were both ranked at three star standard.

However, all of Oxford's toilets missed out on the five star grading awarded to such excellent public conveniences as Park Street in Cambridge and Trafalgar Square toilets.

The overall winner from all the categories was The Eden Project, which was the lucky recipient of the "famous golden loo seat, mounted on a mahogany plinth".

Some of the specifications for a good toilet, as stated in the Loo of the Year Toilet Charter November 2003, are that there should be "adequate provision for hand drying, preferably a choice of two types", and that the "required number of female cubicles" can be worked out by the "number of male cubicles plus the number of urinals times two".
