Magdalen President tipped for BBC role

By Marinel Fitzsimons

The President of Magdalen College, Anthony Smith CBE, has been touted as a new candidate for the chairmanship of the BBC.

In the fallout of the findings of the Hutton Inquiry, which led to the resignation of BBC Chairman Gavyn Davies, the corporation is renouncing its tradition of alternating between a left and right wing chairman, and scouting for politically neutral candidates.

The 65-year-old Magdalen president, who is not affiliated to any political party, and has a history in television and media dealings, declined to comment.
