Oxford Women's hockey continued its successful build-up to the Varsity this week with a convincing 2-0 win against Bracknell at the weekend.

This Wednesday saw the Blues play a practice game against the Centaurs and, in preparation for the Varsity match, only eligible players were picked by captain Aaron Yentob.

Sport: Oxford Blues frozen out

A severely depleted Oxford XV faced the Penguins on Wednesday, fully aware that their defensive capabilities would be sorely tested. In the penultimate Blues home game of the rugby year and the 25th meeting between the two sides, a rather makeshift Oxford side put up a brave fight, not lacking in determination, but were ultimately put to the sword by a customarily attacking Penguins side, which ran in four tries to record a 27-13 victory. ...


Sport: Crew Diary

This past weekend OUWBC travelled to Dorney Lake for match races against Marlow, who brought two crews to race us over three 1500m pieces, rate-capped at 30. For both the Blue Boat and Osiris, this was our first proper match race since crew selection.

Sport: Oxford on track against Tabs

This year's British University Karting Championship kicked off to a flying start with Oxford beating Cambridge in every race. The up-and-coming series features 43 teams from 30 different universities from around the country. The series is ultra competitive for 2004 with professional drivers (Formula Renault, Formula 3 and TVR Tuscan Challenge and national karting championships) and novices alike competing in standard TKM karts from Club 100. These karts can out-accelerate a Porsche 911 and have the added sensation of being one inch from the ground....


Sport: Finals Face-off

Reigning champions Teddy Hall secured their place in the Cuppers final with a consummate win over an emerging St Catz. Boosted by an influx of University players including ex-Blues Captain Fraser Gemmel, St Catz had most of the early possession and took the lead through a Steve Pitcher penalty.

Trinity College dominated to win the combined competition, with the President of Trinity College, Michael Beloff QC, competing in the 800m. A combined Teddy Hall/Jesus team came second and New College third.

With only five weeks to prepare, we are aware of the proximity of the race. Both boats have now spent a week together in fixed crews and recognise that the work we do now may well decide the races' outcomes; the importance of every single stroke of every single outing is paramount.

This weekend, for the first time, not one team kept a clean sheet in the Premiership. The art of defending is slowly but surely dying out. It is frankly laughable that Arsenal, not known for their defensive strengths, have leaked the fewest goals this season. I suppose they do say attack is the best form of defence. That is not the kind of defending I'm talking about. I miss the kind of defending exemplified by the famous Arsenal back four. ...
