Majestic play by Oxford in hockey Varsity

On an "unaccountably" hot day, and watched by packed crowd at Middlesex University's astro, Oxford took on Cambridge in what was to be a thrilling match and, ultimately, a majestic victory for the Dark Blues.

The opening minutes were characterised by nervous play, with neither side able to assert their authority on the game. Cambridge were the first to find their rhythm and Oxford were forced to rely on their solid goalkeeper, Duncan Mills, to keep the Tabs at bay. The pressure continued and Cambridge were unfortunate to miss out on a goal after a deflected shot hit the crossbar.

Just as Oxford nerves were reaching their height, Oxford capitalised on the silky skills of Dar Soloman to win a much needed short corner. Rob Frampton wasted no time in slotting away the rebounded strike, although it appears Chris 'DK' Allfrey may have given it the final nudge after his lightning push out.

Oxford wasted no time in capitalising on their new found advantage. They asserted further pressure on Cambridge, which resulted in another short and an impressive strike from captain Dan Fox, who gave the Dark Blues a commanding 2-0 lead going into the second half.

Despite an enthusiastic crowd and a confident Oxford start to the second half, it was Cambridge who were first to score from a scrappy goal. Fox was again dominant in midfield and initiated a blinding run which gave Mark Little the chance to set up Dave Cresswell for Oxford's third and final goal. The pressure showed and Cambridge's captain was left to watch his side struggle from the sin bin.

It was not long before Oxford had to take a more defensive role in the match as Cambridge fought for survival. A continuous spate of Cambridge shorts resulted in a well deserved goal, after man of the match Duncan Mills saved countless attacks. The renewed Cambridge hopes were unfounded, however, as Oxford held on to complete a majestic and well deserved victory, retaining the Varsity cup.

Oxford's Women were beaten 2-0 in their match, despite dominating in the first half and displaying strong performances from many team members.
