Net-balls up for Oxford

Net-balls up for Oxford

Saturday saw both the Blues and Roos Varsity netball matches at Iffley. A huge crowd of support had gathered before either match began, and the sides of the sports hall were lined with Cambridge supporters, many of whom appeared to have come solely for these games.

The Roos were unfortunate to fall behind very early in their game and they were never to recover from Cambridge piling early goals in, but once they had established themselves in the second half the scoring was relatively even and at the final whistle the visitors claimed a 45-18 victory.

Those hoping for better fortunes in the Blues match were disappointed, as it began in largely the same fashion. Senior squad members Sarah Woolley and Geri Lynch at Centre and Wing Defence respectively worked hard to turn the tide while Captain Helen Turner had an effective game in and around the D. Unfortunately, Cambridge had two superb players at Goal Attack and Goal Shooter and by half time it appeared that the Blues were chasing a lost cause. The second half was notable for the improvement in the Oxford side and, as with the 2nds squad, the scoring was relatively even, despite the fact that the Tabs ran out 59-29 winners. The second half performance should give the team much encouragement for next year's BUSA league and a rematch in Cambridge next year.
