Double win for OUWRFC

By Kathryn Gilbert

OUWRFC MADE a positive start to the term with a double away victory for the Blues and the Panthers.

Following the spate of injuries that hampered BUSA progress at the end of Michaelmas, the Blues team were almost back to full strength with the team they took to play Brunel in a friendly.

Despite a nervy start, Oxford used a strong mix of pace from the backs and strength in the pack to seal a 42-0 win. The game saw a couple of strong runs from captain Rebecca Young and Welsh student Bethan Walsh, both adding to their impressive score tally this season.

Spurred on by this example, newcomers Stacey Beard, Catherine Page and Laura Richards all scored, putting them in strong contention for a place in the varsity team to travel to Cambridge in March.

Despite a below par performance in the scrums, the Blues' forwards made impressive ground with several well-organised drives.

Loosehead Katie Smith made a breakaway run on the wing, proving that props have pace as well, and later assisted hooker, Kathryn Gilbert, in driving over the line for a front-row try.

Special mention should be given to Elaine Gellman, whose inspirational tackling at flanker made her a deserved player of the match.

The OUWRFC second team, the Panthers, began their mountain of BUSA fixtures this term with a convincing 29-0 away win against Northampton 1st.

Forward Lana Kulas' experience proved invaluable, as she scored one try and converted two. Elizabeth Lennox, Kate Bugler and Charlotte Kestner also made it onto the scoresheet.
