Do Mogwai have to pretend that they’ll be doing something new this time? They say the new album’s heavier, with none of the quiet and subtle instrumental numbers that have defi ned them this far into their careers, but precede it with this single. It’s great but gentle, and with that old coruscating guitar noise reined in between restrained piano and mournful cello, it’s so... so Mogwai. It’s a sound they can’t help making and no-one else can manage.
It’s good to have them back.
