As I ripped through my closet last night in order to dress for a fairly smart night out, I came to the conclusion that I have nothing to wear. This might sound silly to you; rest assured, when I was in my room where clothes occupy the bookshelves the idea seemed even more preposterous. It was true though. I had nothing to wear. Oxford is very lucky a nude Jenny did not stroll down Cornmarket last Friday night.
Being a creative little keen-o however, I pulled something together at the very last moment which involved an old silk dress and some seriously hardware accessories. The panicked experience made me think however. At the time of wardrobe crisis, what I really wanted was to pull an Aquascutum tulle dress out of my closet; however, the overdraft is not as forgiving of seriously nice clothes as it could be.
Certainly other fashion forward girls at Oxford must have a time of updating their outfi t repertoire on a student’s budget. With this in mind, I have prepared a little cheat sheet for updating your wardrobe on the sly:
Make the Little Black Dress Yours Besides the usual chat involving updating your evening standard with trendy jewelry, the most unexpected thing to do with the LBD is dress it down for the day.
Recently, I have been very drawn to wearing my poufy, vaguely eighties black cocktail dress with a jumper and boots. Alternately, a black body skimming slip dress looks smashing with a cardigan and moccasins: perfect for the Rad Cam. This added mileage out of your party wear saves you from investing in more winter skirts and blouses.
Avoid Investing in Skinny Jeans At the moment, skinny jeans rule the cobblestones.
If you are uncertain whether or not you want to invest in a seriously nice pair for the next two to three years, however, I have an alternative that looks almost fresher than tapered denim at the moment. Avoid wearing jeans at the moment because they are so trendy. Instead, subvert the craze by wearing tights with oversize jumpers and fl ats. Very Mia Farrow, and very inexpensive.
Update Your Denim Skirt The denim skirt is such a staple.
A year on it might be looking a little tired, a little worn, and a little frayed. There are a few ways to freshen her up, however. If you are handy with a needle, attach a thin strip of black lace to the hem of the skirt. This gives the impression of a naughty slip poking out which is perfect for absolutely conquering your tutorial, and tutor.
Another option is layering a very short slip dress over your denim skirt; a paring which delightfully deviates from the usual jumper and skirt combination. Another recipe for skirt success is layering colourful skinny belts where your usual tribal belt would fall on your denim skirt.
