Lest we forget
This week saw the anniversary of The Oxford Student staff walk out, which marked a crucial step towards fighting for the importance of editorial independence. It was a much-needed outcry against intimidation and external pressures, which relied on the leadership and initiative of a few to put themselves on the line and motivate others for an greater cause. One year on the impact of their actions is still felt throughout the paper, as is the importance of the things they stood up for.
What was at stake, for all the talk of journo hackery and gimpery, was and still is at the heart of the student press. The existence of competition gives both papers an edge, and it is crucial to keep its credibility alive. The Oxford Student can only learn from the example of those who gave so much to making the paper what it is today. Thanks guys and best of luck.
