Dirty Pretty Things finally embarked on their first UK tour, kicking off at the Oxford Zodiac. It’s been nearly two years since The Libertines came out and in the meantime Babyshambles have released Down In Albion and dominated the news. Now it is time for Carl Barat to take the spotlight. The gig was absolutely packed, which is remarkable given the fact that Dirty Pretty Things are yet to even release their first single.
Songs such as The Enemy, with a mid-tempo catchy refrain, and the bonkers Deadwood, which opened the show, were received very well by the audience. The mood quelled halfway in as the band continually played new and unfamiliar songs. Of course, it is difficult to gauge a reaction from a crowd when they haven’t really listened to the material beforehand. Nevertheless, the intimate nature of the gig and the chemistry of the band on stage ensured a generally buzzing atmosphere.
The greatest cheer of the night was to answer Barat’s, “Does anyone here like The Libertines?” which preceded an electric performance of Death On The Stairs. As encores the band performed France and I Get Along to a rousing reception, with drummer Gary Powell milking the applause. After performing their new material it is obvious that a solid debut album is in the offering, with Bang Bang having the potential to be a classic song. We’ll have to wait and see.
