An unidentified Hertford second-year tried unsuccessfully to bring down the Oxford Union in his own small way last week. He copied five hundred flyers, promising anyone a free drink at the Union bar if they claimed that "Ben sent me". Union President, Ben Seifert was not amused: "It's a very a bad thing to do, even though we do have cheaper drinks." Even the opportunity to pose as President Ben's best friend was not enough to drag people away from their college bars though: only nine people turned up.

Oxford's infamous May Ball was this week bought by Pembertons, the AIM-listed bar and club operator. The purchase may signal a whole new May day experience in future.

Pembertons hope to boost attendance at the annual out of town ball from 4000 to more than 10,000 and employ top DJs for a high profile event.

Pop star, Madonna, has turned down repeated invitations to appear at the prestigious Oxford Union in favour of an opportunity to deliver a talk on 'image and reality' at Peterhouse College, Cambridge. Dr John Adamson of Peterhouse enticed the chanteuse to appear at his college during a recent party which they both attended in LA. She is due to appear in Cambridge next term.

The OUSU Freshers' Guide which should have been given out to all new students was finally distributed this week at Freshers' Fair. However an error at the printers meant that a larger font was used than prescribed by the editor. The result being that very few of the articles reached their conclusions.
