Netball II
Plymouth: 26
Oxford: 61
Laura Dixon
Oxford University's Netball Club had a resoundingly successful start to their season last Wednesday, with the second seven thrashing Plymouth University 61-26.
The Oxford team, with Australian international Susan Dando in defence, seemed to be plucking balls out of nowhere and reached quarter time 14-4 up. Plymouth woke up in the second quarter, and began to fight back. But they were hindered by tight defence and the strong shooting of Fiona Macdonald and Beckie Streatfeild. Even so, by half time Plymouth were looking to take a point as only 12 points separated the two teams.
To counter this, tactical positional changes were made by Oxford, with Hayley Wregglesworth and Lauren Moore taking charge of the defence. This and some brilliant fast-paced netball turned the game around, with centre passes flowing to quick and nippy Jennie Wallace from speedy centre Sarah Woolley. Both seemed to get everywhere.
Natasha Poser supplied extra height in the circle, hassling and showing determination, and she was ably supported by Laura Dixon - who made some breathtaking interceptions in each quarter. With the final score at 61-26, Oxford University had given Plymouth a masterclass in the art of netball.
OUNC play BUSA games every Wednesday afternoon at Iffley Rd Gym.
