The 1999 Varsity darts match resulted in a resounding victory for Oxford, who retained the trophy after much high-intensity training and preparation by beating tabland 10-2.

The team had been assembled last term through a series of trials. With only one veteran in the side, however, nerves were high. So it was of great comfort when the old man of the team, Martin Wareham, started off the singles with a win.

Next up was captain Jamie Child who, though slightly shaky, managed to pull off a win. Things were going well for the team and only got better, with four more singles wins on the trot. This left Matt Bale of Exeter College a chance to tie up the varsity match. He duly did, leaving the Oxford side with an unassailable 7-0 lead.

At this point the team had started to think about making history with the first ever varsity darts match whitewash. Unfortunately, the fortunes of the team were to briefly change as Paul Richardson narrowly lost his singles game.

However, without wasting any more time, the Oxford side got back into their winning ways as the Oriel pair of Martin Wareham and Stephen West won with ease, followed by Jamie Child and David Brunt. One more defeat meant that at the end of the match the score stood at 10-2.
