Barbie wire cut

St Hilda's JCR has voted in favour of removing the barbed wire from their walls reports Helen Massy-Beresford. They passed a motion at their JCR meeting on Sunday night to replace it with a more effective and aesthetically pleasing security measure.

The barbed wire, on a wall backing on to Cowley Place, was installed five years ago at the request of the JCR and has fuelled comments about Hilda's students attempting to keep men out ... or in.

However, the JCR President Ruth Hunt denied that the college is hoping to change its image and pointed out that other colleges including New College and St Peter's also have barbed wire.

Security is tight at St Hilda's, which is one of the few colleges with a 24-hour lodge. Students are also required to sign in their guests between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m.

Hunt said that the college wanted a replacement security measure which would be effective but at the same time more subtle.
