Crime Watch
EVERY FOUR MINUTES a student becomes a victim of crime in the UK, recent research shows.
NUS have launched a joint campaign with the police to raise awareness and improve security.
Measures adopted include videoing and photographing known offenders, "high profile" policing, student safety talks and crime prevention materials.
Particularly at risk are white males aged 19-24, who own mobile phones and bikes. Phone theft has quadrupled in the last year.
Cashcard crime has also become a particular worry. Students have even been walked from their homes to cashpoints by thieves, say the police.
Oxford isn't exactly a crime capital, but its students would be well advised not to be compacent. Bicycle theft especially is a major problem in the city.
