GENUINE TITLE CONTENDERS? Or merely pretenders to the crown?

Friday's titanic clash with reigning champions Wadham will tell us more about Somerville's chances this season, writes Rob Devey.

An impressive demolition of Worcester on Monday, left spectators wondering if they can go one better than last season's runners-up spot. And if Somerville can beat Wadham in this showdown, only a fool would write off their chances.

Wadham go into their first match of the season handicapped by the loss of last season's top-scorer Brendan McGurk, who is currently injured. They will also be without Blues stars Deji Davies and Mark Addley, who have a match on Wednesday.

Captain Laurence Clarke is fully aware of the threat Somerville will pose:

"This is about as tough a start as we could have got," he said.

"Somerville have lots of good players, and were pretty much unbeaten last year.

"They'll be there or thereabouts come the end of the season.

"But if we keep it tight defensively, I don't see why we can't beat them."
