This week, Hackwatch has got his greasy hands on a VERY interesting document. Unknown to many even inside the Union, spoof election manifestos are floating around Frewin Court. Hackwatch was particularly intrigued by the spoof Hilary 2000 manisfesto

Charles Kennedy has got news for us. Britain needs the Liberal Democrats. He has noticed that people are pretty disappointed with Labour since the last election. A lot people are fairly worried by William Hague's 'headcase' agenda. Of course they can't win the next election, but for decent, civilised people the Lib Dems have a lot going for them. We should have a proper debate on cannabis. Europe isn't some giant ogre that will eat us all for breakfast, but there is need for discussion, reform and a referendum on the single currency....

One morning I was sitting in my farmhouseroom in Rani Kuwa, a small Nepalese village, reading and occasionally glancing out at the terraced fields leading down to the river. I remember that about half way through a particularly compelling passage of "Middlemarch" my concentration was smashed by a loud 'thwack'. I looked out to see what it is was. Much to my horror and excitement there lay on the floor outside a goat. A metre or so away lay the goat's head and there was much blood in between. Sensing my alarm the farmer turned to me, beaming with a bloody sword in his hand, "Today we kill goat. Take you goat Peter sir?". I realised that the goat was for dinner. Having lived purely on...

Over the past couple of years thousands of activists have participated in anti-capital demonstrations from the City to Seattle, and most recently in Prague. They are often criticized for their violence and supposed ignorance. They are accused of being mindless vandals, who do not know a structural adjustment programme from a sweatshop, Wal-mart from the WTO. Although there is no denying the presence of a violent minority, the charge of ignorance is ill founded. For shunning fame (or infamy), quietly and thoughtfully, a theorist has emerged to powerfully guide this burgeoning movement. Her name is Naomi Klein and her book, No Logo: Taking Aim at the Brand Bullies, is one of the most influential of last year, as reflected in celebrity followers including Radiohead....

Why a page for woman, by women? Why is there a need for such a thing? Forgive me if I sound confrontational, but I think it's a useful question to ask. Throughout this university there are services providing for women's needs; women's officers, women's lunches, women's protests and meetings, and, of course, a college admitting only women. It goes without saying that men's lunches, events and groups are much rarer. My college has, admittedly, started to hold men's lunches, which are fairly well attended, if only because the food is free. But it is true that women feel that their identity needs affirming. Having been subjected to marginalisation for so many years, we women are now coming into our own, and boy are we making the most of it ( if you'll excuse the pun). It's as if, being at last allowed to be seen and heard as independent people, we have got intoxicated with the idea....
