Say Yes To Rent

AN INCREASE IN Lincoln accommodation rents was met with a disappointing response from

students in an emergency JCR meeting last Wednesday.

The proposal to increase the charges led to a fury of protest last year, with bright red

"Say No To Rent Rises" banners adorning Turl Street. The now second years threatened to

stage a rent strike if the adjustments were made. However, after negotiations led by

ex-JCR President Gideon Holland, the planned SCR rise was reduced to 7.8% with

differential rates between years. The majority of the rise was to fall on the new freshers.

Despite the fact that the unfortunate freshers, who have to bear the brunt of the rent

rises, have now arrived at the college, the motion to strike was voted out easily at the

meeting.

The general feeling among freshers is one of "dispassionate apathy" as it is widely

appreciated that their battels of around £500 a term are still not extortionate compared

with other colleges. This would appear to be the case if one considers that students at

cash-strapped Pembroke are forced to pay bills as high as £800 a term and even had to

be fed by their charitable neighbours Christ Church last year.
