Ladies in net loss (Netball)

OXFORD UNIVERSITY NETBALL team faced a disappointing start to the season last week with both teams losing away, writes Claire Hall.

The first team played a closely fought match against Nottingham. Despite pulling back to within two goals in the last ten minutes they lost 37-44, a score which did not reflect the competitive nature of the match.

The seconds retained their fighting spirit but also lost, 52-24 to Birmingham.

The squad, however, remains optimistic. This Wednesday they play at home and might have better luck on familiar territory. It is early days yet, as the old and new members of the squad are still developing on-court relationships.

As always, attention is focussed on the Varsity match against Cambridge, which will be played in February. A repeat of last year's double success is the aim.

But the squad intend to concentrate primarily on success within the last eight in their respective leagues. Amy Harper, the captain, stated "With improving fitness and the input of our new coach, Denise Green, both teams are aiming for the semi-finals of BUSA." The squad also has new sponsors, UBS Warburg.

They are touring for two weeks next summer, which should bring enjoyment and improved match play. With Barbados and Grenada as their two destinations this could be a just reward if they achieve their goals.
