A Phatter Park End?

PARK END HAS applied for a licence to increase its legal capacity on Wednesday nights to 1,200 - compared with its current maximum of 900.

There was a mixed reaction from students. Some liked the idea of having 300 more sweaty clubbers packed into the Park End Street premises each term-time Wednesday, the most enthusiastic declaring, "they should get as many people as possible in there - the more the merrier. It's a brilliant club, the best in Oxford by a long way."

But others were more sceptical. One said, "It's packed enough as it is in there, so more people is the last thing you want." Another said he had sympathy with local residents who are opposing the plan.

Indeed, many locals have voiced fears that it would mean more noise, crime, litter and vomit. And St Peter's bursar, Brigadier Clendon Daulkes, joined the side of the opposition when he wrote to the council complaining about recent vandalism to his college's nearby annexe. "Noise and vandalism has increased in recent months, cars are not infrequently broken into and a rock was recently thrown across the millstream, breaking a balcony window," he said. He feared more clubbers could only mean more incidents.

The application will be considered by the city council's licensing panel on Monday.
