Woe-burn for Blues

By Unknown Author

THE BLUES GOLF team suffered mixed fortunes last weekend as they fought out a well-earned draw and went down to a narrow defeat in the latest round of fixtures, writes Robert Simpson.

Oxford travelled to St George's Hill Golf Club, one of the most eagerly awaited venues of this term. It takes some doing to eclipse the likes of Sunningdale and Walton Heath, but there is no doubt about St George's Hill's credentials. A fine course invariably boasts fine players, and the University were pleased to gain a 9-9 draw, after losing heavily last year.

Robert Simpson secured the final point for Oxford, grinding out a 2&1 win which ended in complete darkness. It's not often you have to have the flag held when putting from only six feet away because you can't see the hole.

Chris Allen claimed a notable singles win over former double British Universities champion Andrew White, previously of St Andrews.

The weather was poor the following day at Woburn, and so was the state of the Dukes and Duchess courses, both having a number of temporary greens, and the host club also failed to raise a full twelve man team.

Certainly a disappointing start to a fixture which many of the new players had been looking forward to, having seen the course on television as it hosts the British Masters.

Despite these shortcomings, Woburn managed to sneak home by a solitary point. Chris Allen and James Partington both had the opportunity to win four points in a weekend, but neither was able to win their final singles game.

•The final fixtures of term are against Royal Porthcawl and Burnham and Berrow Golf Clubs.
