Keys Not Fees

Another year goes by, and once more Somerville College decides to increase the difficulty of their students taking any active stand in expressing their opposition towards tuition fees. For a college which has always prided itself on its progressive ethos, it seems ironic that the authorities seem to be doing their utmost to eliminate any kind of ability to protest from their students. Their rigid adoption of the "no fee, no key" policy is a grim indication of the college's unwillingness to listen to genuine student concern....

There can be no doubt that the Revolution Ball had the best of intentions. Taking a group of inner city sixth-formers targeted by the Access Scheme to a non conformist ball, if organised well, would certainly have done no harm to Oxford's reputation.

The Oxford Student has always been viewed as different from Cherwell and, for good or ill, has usually taken a different stance on most matters. Yet the healthy rivalry has only ever served for the good of the Oxford readership, as is testified this week by both papers' nominations for prestigious media awards.
