Balliol First
THIS YEAR'S NORRINGTON table showed Balliol occupying the top slot for the first time in twenty four years. St. Johns was narrowly beaten. Despite getting more firsts than Balliol a glut of thirds pushed it in to second place. New got the highest number of firsts and came in fourth place.
The table is unofficial and not supported by the University in any way, they do not publish a breakdown of college-by-college results. It is compiled by a student and the results are then checked againgst records held by co-operative colleges. The University maintains that the table is "unhelpful" and with less than one percentage point seperating the top four colleges many are left wondering how useful a guide the table is. The Warden of New College, Alan Ryan, however was quick to attribue this to an increased proffesional ethos throughout the whole university. "Third-class degrees have been virtually banished.
The most improved college was Brasenose moving from 18th place to 3rd. Somerville continues to yo-yo up and down the table, moving back to 28th place from 4th place in 2000 table, and 24th in 1999.
