THE OXFORD STUDENT and Cherwell have been nominated for several top student media accolades.

The OxStu has been nominated for newspaper of the year by the Guardian Student Media Awards. It is up against the Steel Press in Sheffield, which won the award last year, and four other papers.

Cherwell picked up four nominations from the Guardian, including Jennifer Alliot Brookes for feature writer of the year and Mark Hodgkinson for best sports writer. Two of the paper's photographers were also nominated.

The Guardian Awards have been running for 23 years and are recognised as the top student media awards in the country and judged by the likes of Jeremy Vine and Alistair Campbell.

Meanwhile, Cherwell also picked up several nominations from the NUS Student Media Awards, associated with The Independent. It received nominations in seven of the twelve categories, including best newspaper, best reporter for Jon Boone and best overall design.

Nell Freeman from Isis magazine also picked up a nomination for best photographer.

Owain James, president of the NUS, commented on the Cherwell-dominated shortlist, saying: "The standard of student journalism continues to improve year on year and I extend my congratulations to all those who have been recognised by the team of expert judges."

The results for the NUS competition will be announced on 27th October.
