Northgate Fire
THE NORTHGATE HALL on St Michael's Street will remain closed for some time after a fire damaged the gay and lesbian centre on the first floor in August.
The centre is a popular nightspot for the university LGB Society after their weekly drinks event.
Although the main hall escaped the flames, the toilets were destroyed and Toby Warner, the centre's secretary and licensee, said the repairs may take some time.
"We've got no water mains and no electricity at the moment because the water pipes burst in the heat," he added.
Craig Knott, spokesperson for new sexual minorities group ID-Soc, said he hoped the centre would be up and running again soon. " The Northgate served a very useful purpose for the gay community in the university," he said.
