Quad to move
CHRIST CHURCH IS set to move one of its most beautiful quads, brick by brick, into the famous Meadows. The relocation, demanded in a successful JCR motion, is subject only to the go ahead from college authorities, who are now considering the request.
The motion, proposed by Lotte Tregear and Mike Taylor, second years at the college, was amended by Ben Sendrove to include the movement of furnishings and fixtures. With this addition the motion was passed "convincingly."
The Senior and Junior Censors, Jack Paton and Judith Pallot, are rumoured to have backed the idea, but Pallot would not comment further, except to say that "all undergraduate requests are treated with the utmost seriousness." The reason given for this unusual motion was that "the Meadow building is a mighty long way from Peckwater building." The second years, resident in both, are, as a result, suffering from a split in their community.
The JCR resolved therefore to mandate the college authorities to move Peckwater Quad on to Christ Church meadows. "This would be great and there would be less (sic) complaints about noisy Peck people, apart from if the cattle give a damn," ran the motion.
Residents of Peckwater had been warned by the college authorities about recent noise levels, and so the JCR reasoned that the move would suit all concerned. The resulting gap, it was suggested, could be filled by the Liddell Buildings, currently on Iffley Road.
David White, JCR President, added a note of caution however: "My own view is that there is an alarming disregard for the ordinary Meadows cow in this motion, and until there has been time for them to consider their formal response I think caution should be advised." The only drawback, in his opinion, to "a straightforward process."
