Suicide bid on Cornmarket

A 20-year-old man threatened to jump off a church tower in Cornmarket Street yesterday afternoon. He sat on the edge of the St Michael Tower of Northgate Church for more than an hour, as spectators gathered. Police, fire and ambulance crews were called just before 3pm, and most of the street was cordoned off. The man was persuaded by police to come down and he was taken to St. Aldates Police Station. Last month parts of Cornmarket was closed off for over an hour when a voluntary patient from the Warneford Hospital in Oxford also threatened to jump before agreeing to come down.
