Sore-ass Sheldonian?
The Sheldonian Theatre is recovering this week after being named and shamed as the most uncomfortable theatre in Britain.
BBC Radio Four listeners blasted the 350-year old classical music venue and Oxford landmark, with one listener saying his bottom and back, "cannot take the pain and strain anymore."
The complaints have struck a chord with students who matriculated earlier this month. Olivia Knibbs from Queen's College said, "some cushions would have been a great improvement at matriculation. I wouldn't have sat there that long out of choice."
However Patrick Lantschner from St John's commented, "it's difficult to see how they would improve the Sheldonian to make it more comfortable. It's a small but beautiful building." Jeffrey Hackney, Chairman of the Curators at the Sheldonian, told the OxStu that he was disappointed with the label, but said the problem lay mainly with three rows of deep seats in the Upper Gallery, which could not be re-upholstered for health and safety reasons.
"If anyone can produce a solution which is not dangerous to people then please contact me," he said.
