Chaos Suspended

Chaos Suspended

Construction work on Cornmarket has temporarily ceased over the Christmas period, writes Ella Davis.

The hope is that interrupting the re-paving project will avoid further disruption to shoppers, pedestrians and retailers over the busiest weeks of the year.

Work is expected to resume on 12th January, with Oxfordshire County Council speculating that the £3.2 million overhaul will finally be completed, five months later than scheduled, in March 2004.

David Robertson, Executive Member of the Council for Transport, said: "I think the work that has been done so far looks good. I would have preferred everything to have been completed before Christmas but unfortunately that was not possible."

Businesses and shoppers were quick to express relief at the suspension of work. The Store Manager of WH Smith told The OxStu: "I'm absolutely delighted they've stopped work over November and December, which is the busiest time for us."
