Exeter's private plans
The issue of college prioritising conferences over students is raised again this week as Exeter decides between two different development plans, writes Caroline Okell.
Whilst the first plan would entail redecoration and building additional showers for students, the second plan involves an entire gutting of the building and the creation of en-suite rooms, a plan that will attract conferences to the college, but will also leave the block unusable for the following academic year and force many students into far more expensive private housing.
On Monday the JCR was evenly split over the propositions, while the SCR is to pass judgement in the next few days. The Bursar's Secretary told The OxStu that they "will take into account student views, but ultimately the final decision lies with the governing body."
The safety of existing rooms was called into question recently after a student was trapped in his room when his lock broke and the fire door also became stuck. Luke Elson told The OxStu that "If a fire developed in the middle of the night my only way out would be a window leading onto a narrow and dangerous bit of roof."
