More Postal Strife

By Mary Morgan

The postal service in Oxford ground to a halt last week, as the city's postmen formed a picket-line in protest over working conditions, writes Mary Morgan.

The latest series of unofficial 'wildcat' strikes come after the Communications Workers Union recently voted not to resort to official strike action. The complaint of the CWU members is that this decision was then used to undermine their Union, with Royal Mail management subsequently refusing to negotiate with the organisation.

The strike in Oxford came to an end after an agreement to recommence negotiations was reached on Monday. Individual picketers will face no disciplinary action.

Oxford postman Paul Garraway told The OxStu that the outcome signalled a major victory for the postal workers, though he may reconsider this opinion when he sees the 500,000 letters waiting for them.
