Recycle that rubbish!

Recycle that rubbish!

A popular University recycling campaign has proved a source of disagreement amongst Oxford City Councillors.

The initiative, backed by students from around the University, was first promoted by LibDem councillors Fiyaz Mughal and Jean Fooks and led, earlier in the year, to a pilot scheme at Jesus and Exeter. But the scheme has failed to incorporate all colleges this term.

Councillor Jean Fooks has expressed dismay that, despite the apparent success of the pilot schemes, a November 3rd meeting between councillors, officers, students and bursars decided only to extend the initiative to one more college - St Cross. She complained that it had previously been agreed to extend the campaign to at least eleven more colleges this term, after nearly ten tonnes of glass, cans and paper were collected from the first two colleges.

Fiyaz Mughal, councillor for Holywell Ward, agreed. He believes that "despite the way students have lobbied", council administration still seems reluctant in its efforts.

Elsewhere, recycling initiatives appear to be achieving more support. The Glass Goes Green project, backed by Oxford Brookes University and the district council, is being piloted in 25 clubs, pubs and hotels around Oxfordshire, for example.
