Sheldonian closed for matriculation
Oxford freshers will not be matriculating in the Sheldonian Theatre this year as it is currently closed to the public in order to carry out urgent structural repairs and renovations.
The building work, which will cost in the region of £1m, is centred on repairing the ceiling cornice and conserving the painted ceiling panels, which have been temporarily removed.
Chairman of the Curators of the Sheldonian Mr Jeffrey Hackney said: "The University deeply regrets the closure of the Sheldonian Theatre for repairs at short notice. It was clear to us that we could not allow public events to be held in the auditorium until this work had been carried out."
A University spokesperson told The Oxford Student: "Everybody involved very much hopes that the Sheldonian will be re-opened by the end of December."
Alternative venues are being found for the many ceremonies and events that usually take place in the theatre, such as degree ceremonies and the admission of the new Vice-Chancellor, Dr John Hood.
In a massive break from tradition, the matriculation of freshers, traditionally held annually in the Sheldonian Theatre, will be moved to the Examination Schools this year.
